Abstract EN

Sound and healthy construction industry is vital for the development and economy of Jordan.

Therefore, the goal of this paper is to explore the contractors’ viewpoint about the problems that hinder this industry.

To this end a qucstionniare was sent to 85 contractors.

It tapped: (1) managerial problems, (2) competition with foriegn and local contractors, (3) bill afproval and delays in payments, (4) financial problems, (5) problems with the consultant, (6) unclear or vague drawings and specifications, (7) project control, and (9) contractual problems.

The analysis showed that the contractors are facing tough local competition.

In addition to this, big companies are facing serious competition from foreign contractors.

The analysis showed contractors’ dissatisfaction with the behavior of the consultants and with the quality of their drawings.

Surprisengly, most contractors wanted all drawing and specifications to be clear and with minimum mistakes.

The analysis showed that the contractors are facing considerable problems in obtaining finances, bonds, and loans.

However, the contractors stressed the need to review all regualations concerning construction contracts.
