Abstract EN

This study has clarified the characteristics of call taxi service in general and in Greater Amman in particular.

The development of this service in Amman since 1950 was stated.

The nature of: taxi drivers, taxi cars and taxi offices were investigated through distributed questionairs, oral interviews and telephone conversation.

The study indicated that the development of taxi service in Amman has been influenced by the extra ordinary circumstances happend in Jordan during the seventies and early eighties of this century.

This resulted in an enormous increase in taxi car numbers.

Such increase has created a burden on the national economy, a rise in car accidents, and an increase in environmental polution.

It was shown in the study that the increased number of yellow cabs is of greate impact on down town traffic.

The study has also formulated some important conclusions that help decision makers concerning this profission.
