English Abstract
This study was interested in investigating the hematological and biochemical characteristics of ethanolic extract of Capparis spinosa leaves in normal and diabetic rats.
Four groups of rats were used: normal control rats, normal rats treated orally with 100 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of C.
spinosa for 4 weeks, streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and diabetic rats treated orally with 100 mg/kg body weight of C.
spinosa ethanolic extract for 4 weeks.
The results showed that the C.
spinosa ethanolic extract is non toxic even at higher dose (800 mg / kg) of rats.
The present study showed a non significant (p > 0.05) change in: red blood cells(RBCs) count and total white blood cells (WBCs) count, serum levels of glucose, total protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and creatine kinase(CK) in normal rats that treated with ethanolic extract of C.
spinosa.
However, serum creatinine level was significantly (p < 0.05) increased.
In STZ-diabetic rats that treated with ethanolic extract of C.
spinosa the RBCs count was significantly (p < 0.05) increased while total WBCs count was not significantly (p > 0.05) differed as compared to diabetic control rats.
In this group (STZ-diabetic rats) the levels of serum glucose, total protein, ASAT and ALAT were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased as compared to diabetic control rats.
Other parameters cholesterol, triglyceride, ALP and CK were not significantly (p > 0.05) changed.
It is concluded that ethanolic extract of C.
spinosa leaves is non toxic, and it has a hypoglycemic activity in diabetic rats without side effects on hematological and biochemical parameters.
