English Abstract

The high cost of products is one of the important problems faced by most Iraqi companies because there are other rival companies producing the same products but at affordable prices.

In order to achieve competition and selling products in markets Taguchi method has been applied in the State Company for Electrical Industries (SCFEI) on one of the parts of its products, a shaft in the water pump.

To solve the problem of the high cost of the products, Taguchi method was applied to select the optimal level of control factors by using Taguchi L9 orthogonal array.

This method is applied to the rotating shaft of air cooler water pump; this shaft is manufactured at high cost from alloy steel of high resistance to corrosion and wear.

So that it has changed by a CK50 steel at low cost and And characteristics of wear and corrosion resistance improved using the method of hard chrome plating and by applying this theory and the optimum conditions of each factor are found.

Effect of each control factor on the performance measure is studied individually using the signal to noise ratio.

In the first stage the Taguchi method is applied in a turning process for four factors with three levels to select the optimum level of each factor that give lowest surface roughness of the rod.

The optimum levels that achieve are: > Nose radius (Nr): 0.8 mm Feed rate (F) : 0.03 mm/rev > Cutting speed (C) : 45 m/min > Depth of cut (D) : 0.5 mm The second stage is applied Taguchi method in a coating process by using three factors with three levels that effect on the coating process.

After coating process, two tests are doing to select the optimum level of factors are: wear test to find increase the resistance of wear by using Wear Apparatus type ( Pin on Disc D2625 -83 (ASTM) to compute the wear rate.

Corrosion test for increase the resistance of corrosion by using Computerized Potentiostat (Type Wenking LT87).

For increase corrosion and wear resistance the best level are: > The temperature at first level(45Co) > The current at second level (30 A) > The time at second level(20 min) > By applying the Taguchi method of this processes and selects the optimum level of parameters, the final product gives a shaft with low wear and corrosion rate.

The feasibility study of the suggested shaft when used from the company comparing with the cost of the original shaft gives a profit 565(I.D) for every individual shaft and the profit of every year is 74580000 I.D.

The percentage contribution of reduce cost 32% of shaft cost.
