The story of Youssef (Joseph) in the Quran is highly regarded and cherished, and figures significantly in several modern and contemporary studies, prompting many to ask: what is the source of its power? In response to the ready-made terminology and conceptualizations often surrounding Joseph’s story, El Mouden presents a different interpretation offering an in-depth psycho-analytical perspective.

The author notes how the restriction in generating new conceptualizations directly from a text leads to unconvincing conclusions such as those proposed by some contemporary studies linking this religious story in particular to the “Oedipus Complex”.

El Mouden argues that the story itself does not only focus on the relationship of a child to his parents, but also accords priority to other members of the family, allowing one to infer a different pathology or “complex”, possibly prior to and more important than the Oedipus Complex: something the author proposes to call the Brotherhood Complex
