English Abstract

This thesis tackles O’Casey’s female characters and the influence of war on his presentation of the social psychology of women characters in his Dublin Trilogy: The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924), and The Plough and the Stars (1926).

These characters refer to the women’s mental and moral qualities.

The work poses a number of questions concerning women and their historical role in the Irish society during the national struggle for Independence.

The principal objective of this thesis is to establish how war shaped the main traits of the female characters in his three Dublin plays.

The study tries to achieve three specific points to ensure that the general objectives are carried out: firstly, identification of the female characters in the three play, secondly, an examination of the mental and moral qualities of the identified women and an investigation of the influence of war on the social attitude, finally, psychology of women characters.

This thesis falls into five chapters: the first chapter is an introductory one and provides essential information about the study.

The second chapter critically analyzes The Shadow of a Gunman and identifies the roles of the female characters in the play.

The third chapter deals with Juno and the Paycock and investigates the nature and function of the female characters in it.

The forth chapter tries to analyze the roles and attitudes of female characters in The Plough and the Stars.

The fifth chapter presents the conclusions reached at through discussions in the previous chapters.

It also summarizes the main findings.

Most of discussions are carried out through a critical and analytical approach relying mainly on close-reading to that texts of the plays and on other critical material produced out them
