A dangerous social phenomenon has become rife in our Algerian community, like in other world societies, which is illegal immigration, known as the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

It is a colloquial term which is widely spread in the Algerian society.

This phenomenon managed to alarm all State bodies, and has become a hot and sensitive problem.

A hot problem by virtue of the related dramatic events that are revealed in newspapers or on TV news from time to time.

It is a sensitive problem because it affects all standards of society.

Not only does the phenomenon have come to affect the youth, particularly males, but it has gone beyond that to include females and minors.

The term illegal immigration has become a common term, even in songs, in order to express the phenomenon.

The phenomenon of illegal immigration is characterized by being present all year round.

That is to stay, it is continuous in time and widespread in place.

After being rife in the west of the country, it spread to the middle and to the east of the country, where 130 illegal immigrants were detained in Ain Temouchent province in 2007.

More than 540 illegal immigrants were returned from Spain to Oran province in 2008.

More than 1100 illegal immigrants were detained in Annaba province, in 2007.

No matter how much we tried, we cannot determine a fixed date for the appearance of this phenomenon - illegal immigration.

However, we can say that it emerged right after the tightening and closure of the Spanish, borders which were considered the first gate to the EU countries from Morocco.

The latter country may be the first to witness this phenomenon as a result of the closure of the Spanish borders, particularly at the cities of Septa and Melilla.

The city of Ghazaouet, in Algeria, witnesses the phenomena since the 1990s, at the expense of its inhabitants.

However, the route has shifted from the land, to the sea, that is to say, hiding onboard commercial vessels, or using boats that lack minimal safety requirements.

In view of the complexity of the this phenomenon, its widespread in Algeria, and the issues and subjects it brings up, there is a need for the scientific and objective studying and analysis of the social integration of illegal immigrants in their country of immigration, their change in life style, values and social relations, and the advantages and disadvantages of the phenomenon of illegal immigration on the country and the society of origin.

We will touch on the reasons and motives behind embarking upon illegal immigration, taking into consideration all the related factors in the city of Ghazaouet, which witnesses an increase in the phenomenon, with illegal immigration becoming a profession for its youth.

According to the city’s Coast Guard statistics, there were 119 illegal immigrants detained in 2006, 147 in 2007, and 12 in 2008.

More than 1997 illegal immigrants were deported from Spain to the port of the city of Ghazaouet, over the period of 2005 to January 2009.

Hence, the determination of Algerian youth to illegally immigrate, in spite of the dangers that characterize the phenomenon, and which may amount to death, urges us to pose a question in this research.
