Abstract EN

The rules regarding the quiescent ruin (al-niin al-sdkinab) and nunation (al-tarwhi) are prominent among the topics with which the scicnce of Qur’an recitation {tajm'd) deals.

No book on tajrn'dis free from a chapter on this subject.

Some authors wrote books wholly- dedicated to it.

Among these is CA1I ibn cUthman ibn Muhammad, better known as Ibn al-Qasih, who wrote Nn^bat al-Musbtaghilinft Abkdm al-Nun al-Sdkinab wa al-Tanmn (The Repose of those Concerned with al-Nun al-Sakinah and al-Tamvin).

In this manuscript, Ibn al- Qa§ih explains the rules on the subject illustrating each rule with ample examples.

The manuscript is characterized by conciseness and compactness.

Its importance can be discerned from the fact that it is the first known independent compilation on the subject.

It is also noteworthy that, on the other hand, those who came after Ibn al-Qa§ih drew on his work in their compilations on the subject, and cited his definitions and examples, especially Zakariyya al-Ansari’s (d.

926 AH) Tnhfat Nuba la’ al-Asr (The Pleasure of the Noblemen of the Age) and Nasir al-Din al-Tabalawi’s (d.

966 AH) Murshidat al- Musbtagbilin (The Guide of the Concerned).

Consequently the current editing and publication of the manuscript were deemed necessary.

The editor begins his study with biographic data on the author and expounds on the manuscripts on which he relies.
