'Hie paper aimed at underlining the importance of the fact that translators should be aware of the terminology of the fields in which they translate and particularly when they embark on translating such a hyper sensitive text as the Glorious Qur'an, 'lo highlight, four varied, widely-read translations were chosen: M.M.

Pickthall’s translation, which represents British Knglish both in vocabulary and style; T.B.

Irving’s translation, which stands as an example of American English; the famous Muslim World League’s Yomba translation; and the most recent so-called Indian Yoruba translation, which was carried out by a non-Arab scholar and had not been critically dealt with before.

First, each one of the select set of Islamic terms (muffa/afrat shafiyyati) was defined and the different scholarly approaches to them were pointed out.

Then the agreed criteria in the field of translating Islamic content were expounded adding to them some criteria that the author saw fit.

'Hie paper then went on to analyze the selected set of terms based on their alphabetical order: .tl-ihsfm.

tahrirraqabah, al-janf bayn al-ukhtayn, az- zakah, az-zina, af-fahur, atf-tfihar and al-mufah.

Prominent among the findings of this paper is that translators made some errors that could be ascribed to failing to realize the technical import of these terms for what it really is.

These errors could, very well, be detrimental to the message of the Qur’an and, by all means, should be avoided in an endeavour of such magnitude.
