Abstract EN

This articlc starts with a brief introduction on the evolvement of the science of tafsir from the time of the Prophet and his Companions, to the Successors [tabi un) during the second century AH, and the advent of linguistic studies for the service of tafsir.

It also points out the importance of Sibawayh’s Kitdb on Arabic grammar and his endeavours in interpreting certain ayahs.

The article is then divided into six parts.

First, Sibawayh’s commentary on certain Qur’anic Icxical items, i.e., verbs, nouns and particles, along with examples, and an exploration of how some exegetes made use of his efforts in this respect.

Second, Sibawayh’s early analytical exegesis and the ways by which exegetes had recourse to his interpretations.

Third, Sibawayh’s interpretation by surmising what has been omitted in instances of ellipsis of the implied (taqdir al-mahdhuf) and how exegetes drew on his views.

Fourth, Sibaw'ayh’s interpretation of multi-faceted (mushkilah) ayahs.

He explains their meanings and syntactical analysis in accordance with the approach he adopted.

Fifth, Sibawayh’s explanation of different Qur’anic readings (qird'at) and his stand on them.

Sixth, Sibawayh’s dialogue with his contemporary scholars on issues relating to tafsir.
