Abstract EN

This Introduction sums up the author’s wide readings in English translations of the Glorious Qur’an.

In it he maps up the different approaches that characterize this long checkered history' since Alexander Ross’s first English translation of the Qur’an in 1649 up till the recent 2002 translations.

A rich history of negotiation through translation spanning just over three and a half centuries with many twists and turns.

The approaches identified in this Introduction are those of the Orientalists, the reactionists, the Muslim-converts, the apologetic pseudo- rationalists, the Qadyanis, as well as the sectarian, the scientific, the whimsical, the recyclist, the exegetical and the revisionist approaches.

At the end of this brief survey, the author comes up with some calculated suggestions on how to improve in order to produce better translations.
