Abstract EN

The Qur’an is fertile with prosodic features conductive to signifying meaning, which makes understanding the recited ayahs clear and easy.

The Qur’an reciter may, through suprascgmental features like pitch, loudness, tempo and rythm, convey meaning that the listener will understand without difficulty.

This is, probably, one of the main arguments for learning the Qur'an aurally, rather than merely studying the written text.

Moreover, one cannot find in widely-distributed prints of the Qur’an punctuation marks that lead to understanding its meaning, or the connection between words and sentences.

Here is where oral performance becomes of great help.

This important area of research seems to be overlooked by many analytical studies of Qur’an translations as most of them are kept within the limits of lexical meaning, equivalence between the source and target languages, and the correctness of the overall meaning with regards to its conformity to the Muslim creed.

Hence comes this study to make up, in its own way, for this gap in research demonstrating, at the same time, how the meaning of the same ayah is interpreted differently according to the way it is uttered and the bearing this, inevitably, has on its translation.

Thus emphasis lies here with the prosodic rather than the lexical aspect of the translation.

I have chosen in this study five French Qur’an translations, viz.

those of Jacques Berque, Boubakeur Hamza, Sadok Mazigh, Muhammad Hamidullah and D.

Masson, and the English translation of al-Hillali and Khan.
