Abstract EN

Dermatoglyphics has proved to be very useful tool used for identification of many gene-linked abnormalities and diseases.

The aim of this study was to compare the differences in the finger print patterns and finger ridge count (FRC) in patients with type II diabetic mellitus with non-diabetic as control group in Erbil city, Kurdistan region, Iraq.

The study is conducted in 50 type II diabetic patients and 50 non-diabetic persons as a control group.

A sample of 25 male and 25 female patients suffering from type II diabetic mellitus in the age group of (20-70) years has been examined and compared with 50 normal persons (25 males and 25 females) in the same age group to study the differences in finger print patterns and finger ridge count.

The results showed that plane arches in diabetic males and ulnar loops, radial loops and tented arches in diabetic females were increased significantly when compared to the control groups, while whorls were decreased significantly in both males and females when compared to the control groups.

Fingertip ridge counts of both hands of male and female patients showed no significant difference in most digits when compared with control group.

This inference may be widely applied clinically for the early diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus in mass screening of a population as an additional diagnostic tool.
