English Abstract

In this culminating project, I explore the way domestic violence against women is tackled in Saad Chraibi’s Nisaa wa Nisaa fFemmes .

.

.et femmes!.

This project examines the way the film reflects the social reality of women who endure this problem.

In this sense, I rely on the experiences of both of the battered characters—Ghita and Malika—as well as on the testimonies of a sample of seven women who went through or are still living the experience of domestic violence.

This study is based on the social realist theory, which approaches films from both content and aesthetic perspectives.

In this light, the analysis focuses on the economic and socio-cultural factors that culminate in women’s subjugation.

Women’s financial dependency on their husbands, poverty, unemployment, and lack of financial family support lead many women to being subject to domestic violence.

Likewise, the existence of such notions as sbar (patience), h ’shuma (shame), and silence in society prevents women from revealing their experiences of the problem.

Moreover, the analysis highlights some aesthetic devices such as framing, camera tracking movement, sound effects, and symbolism, which emphasize the centrality of the problem of domestic violence against women.

The project aims at emphasizing the role of film in particular—and the media in general—in offering more space for reflection on the problem of domestic violence against women.
