The diminutive (Al_tasgheer) and the structure of the word in the light of contemporary linguistics is addressed in this paper .

This research aims to study diminutive (Al_tasgheer) in regards to its derivation scales, syllables, and explaining phonetic changes that happens to the base form of the word when attaching the morpheme of The diminutive (Al_tasgheer) .

The research reveales that the phonetic changes that belong to the very nature of Arabic regarding phonetic laws, for instance: the sequence of two long vowels is not permissible in the diminutive.

besides, the research reveales that syllables have a big effect in The diminutive (Al_tasgheer) The researcher follows interpretative descriptive method in the analyzing Al_tasgeer.

He pointed out that what occurs of phonetic changes when diminutiving according to ancient Arab linguists, opinions in addition to contemporary Arab linguists .
