Abstract EN

This paper aims at studying the capabilities of Jabal Ali and ؛ts role in the economic and social development in the U.A.E.

during the period between 1979-1986.

The most significant features which have been dealt with in this paper can be summarized in the following; The port of ،Jabal Ali is considered one of the greatest ports in the U.A.E.

and the Gulf Area.

The port lies in Dubai Emirate, some 34 Kilometers to the south west of Dubai on the road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The port started to function in 1979, and in 198ه the free zone was estab' lished.

It included a huge industrial zone to attract industrial investments and foreign trade.

It consists of 67 Queys equipped with recent technological amen-ties which represent 35% of the total number of Queys in the Emirates ports in 1986.

It also handles about 26% of the total cargo of the Emirates ports in 1986.

The total number of ships anchoring in Jabal Ali reached 2943 in 1986, whereas in 1979 they were only 105 or 3.5%.

Moreover, the amount of I handled goods rose in 1986 to about 5,7 million tons in comparison with 397 thousand tons in 1979.

Imports occupied an important position, contributing 77.6ه/ه of the total value of goods in 1986.

Coming next is the re-export trade with some 16.4%, and exports(6%).
