Abstract EN

It is well-known that Antoun Saadeh (1904-/949), the Lebanese writer, politician and founder of the «Syrian National-Socialist Party*, had tried his hand at writing literature before he founded his party in 1932.

He thus wrote two short stories: The Feast of Our Lady ofSayd- naya and A Tragic Love-Affair.

This study analyses the short story The Feast of Our Lady of Saydnaya and sheds light on its ramifications, as they bring out the intellectual background of its writer and his seeking to draw a picture of the nationalist hero which, as / argue, places him in a framework similar to that of« Westerns writers».

The study also shows the author’s cultural investments and uncovers the events he witnessed, including his personal experience of the celebrations surrounding the Feast of our Ixidy in the Syrian town of Saydnaya.

The study aims to connect the writer and his work to the time-frame in which the Arabic novel emerged and matured, i*.
