Abstract EN

The main aim of the paper is to assess the spatial differentiation in the distribution of the rural population and of the indicators of rural development in the region of Ahwar in south Iraq, and comparing these indicators to the rates of population growth.

The spatial and tem- poral dimension is used in distributing the previous indicators in order to assess the role of the rural development plans aiming at minimizing the differences between rural and urban areas.

The paper depends on quantitative methods to reach its aim through two main sections.

The first section studies the distribution of rural population and of rural de- velopment utilities and compares it to the rates of population growth between the years 1977 and 1987.

The second section elucidates the spatial differentiation of the development utilities and of the popula- tion in the region, pointing out the degree of differences between the different areas.

Differences are explained by geographical, natural fac- tors and by economic, human factors.

In its conclusion, an actualiza- tion of a more balanced spatial destribution of the rural development utilities in the region of Ahwar, is recomended as a function of the new development plans.
