This research has a dual objective; the first is to analyze the economic aspects of periodic markets in Jazan while the other is concerned with the spatial dimension of these markets.

This required an investigation of the evolution of periodic markets in Jazan province, changes which affected these markets in recent times, and finally the persistence of these market as a valuable channel for trade in Jazan.

The author has conducted a detailed study of the human and physical geography of Jazan.

This was done in order to comprehend the social and economic foundations for these markets, as well as to understand the locational specificities for each market site in Jazan.

These studies were utilized to make an evaluation of the economic potential of these markets.

They were further utilized to reach an explanation for the specific economic features and spatial patterns of these markets.

In this context, the author has pioneered a new procedure to investigate the role of distance in spatial interaction between pairs of periodic markets in Jazan.
