Abstract EN

As a result of traffic density, pupils traveling to and from schools face road dangers, particularly, in the main cities.

In this case traffic accidents involving pupils has become a prime issue in developed countries.

Schools locations are one main factor affecting pupils traffic safety in urban areas.

Location of schools on heavy traffic roads would increase the pupil accident risks, especially, pedestrain pupils.

In addition, unavailability of road safety elements on streets on which schools are located is considered the main cause of pupils lives.

In order to determine the range of this problem in the Kingdom, Riyadh city has been chosen for this study.

The study based on questionnaires distribued to all schools (male and female schools) through a comprehensive survey method.

Among the significant results reached by the study is that 42% of the male shools and 38% of female schools are located on dangerous roads.

The worst is that 19% of school main entrances are found to be located on the main or heavy traffic roads.

The study also revealed that 55% of the schools surveyed lacked basic elements for students traffic safety, such as speed limit signs, pedestirian crossing lines etc.

The study presented practical proposals aiming at minimizing pupil traffic dangers.

The following axe among the mandatory regulations proposed: choosing suitable locations in new residential areas, modifications of school main entrances to monitor student outflow from the school building to the street, specification of packing places for school buses and parents' vehicles.

The study also presented programs for improving pupil traffic safety standard such as programs for recording pupils traffic accident by using "Child Accident Spot Map".

Other programs include "Road Traffic Safety" and program for "Pupil Road Crossing Guide".

Which is considered to be highly significant.
