Abstract EN

The aim of this research is to analyze the main urban planning factors that causes traffic congestion, and it’s impact, and the best recommended solution to deal with it inside big cities in Saudi Arabia, and in particular the city of Riyadh.

To achieve this goal, two questioners are designed, one set for the users of the urban road network, and the other is to the public officials and key figures responsible for urban transport in the city, and both questioners are been tested for reliability, and validity.

The results of this research show that many factors play a major role in causing traffic congestion in the city.

The order of these factors that cause traffic congestion according to their relative importance are as follows: population growth and concentration of jobs and services in the center of the city is number one cause of congestion.

The other important factors in their order are as follows: lack of public transportation, dependence on private car for daily travel, lack of parking space and its poor organization, slow response to traffic accidents and broken cars on main roads, weakness of exiting road network, continuous taxis movement on the roads, weak application of Intelligent transport technology, weak school transport, weak urban planning in general in the city, limited financial support of the transport sector in general and in particular transport inside the city, and weak coordination between the urban transport related agencies in the city.
