Abstract EN

This paper attempts to analyze the total factor productivity changes and technical changes in Islamic Banks during the period from 2003 to 2011 before the financial crisis and shortly afterwards in order to determine the levels of productivity and technical changes in Islamic banks.

A non parametric Malmquist Productivity Index was applied to calculate the productivity rate.

Total factor productivity was decomposed into technical efficiency and technological change whereas technical efficiency change was further decomposed into pure efficiency change and scale efficiency change.

The decomposition of TFP showed that technical change has shown declining trend of 3 percent, the mean TFP decreased at 2.3 percent' whereas mean technical efficiency has shown a marginal increase of 0.8 percent during that period.

The findings indicate that the decomposition of the productivity change index suggests that Islamic banks productivity progress was mainly attributed to the technological change rather than to efficiency change.
