Abstract EN

This study aims to examine the personality factors that predict depression in a sample of Kuwaiti adolescents.

The sample consisted of 310 male and female secondary school students.

Their ages ranged between 15 and 18 years.

They responded to the multidimensional child and adolescent depression scale and the big five personality questionnaire for children.

Significant positive correlations were found between depression and neuroticism, On the other hand depression was significantly negatively correlated with extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience.

These results were relevant to the total and male samples.

In the female sample, there were significant positive correlations between depression and neuroticism and negative correlations of depression with extraversion, and conscientiousness.

Multiple regression analysis showed that neuroticism was the only personality factor that predicted depression.

These results were relevant to both male and female samples.

It was concluded that participants with a high score on neuroticism may need counseling to avoid depression.
