Abstract EN

The evolution of human society and its complexity has imposed the existance of several forms of social solidarity that led to the emergence of a general conception of solidarity which goes beyong the meaning of charity and derives its strength from the cohesion of society and its institutions as well as from the political management.

All this led to the creation of new social movements that aspire not only to participate in the processes of sustainable development and tackling poverty and oppression, but to protect vulnerable groups and the environment as well.

For these changes a new role of social movements has been emerged and it is presented primarily in the associations as a pressing power on the industrialised nations , to turn gradually to a participating power.

These associations played a big role to put pressure on global financial institutions to re-examine its methods of work with developing countries.

In the nineties, more than 150 non-governmental organisations were involved in a strrong campaign to urge the world bank to have more openness and transparency and to encourage debt reduction and to follow a fairer and less destructive strategy to the environment.

In Algeria, the associative work has been influenced by the adopted political systems, and we can distinguish four ( 4) phases that the association movements have been passed through as they are new social movements emerging in the community.

The first stage went back to the French colonial period where the mechanical and spontaneous solidarity was the prominent and it was based on familly and tribal belonging.

The second stage was the elimination period which was followed by the establishement period.

Finally, the organization period in which the Algerian society knew the established voluntary solidarity .

Therefore, this study aimed to: - Identify the reasons for the emergence of social movements developed in modern societies.

- Provide a model for forms of social solidarity and linked it to the development of social movements in Algeria.

- Highlight the role played by the associations in particular, to achieve sustainable development.

- Stand on the most important obstacles facing the associative work in Algeria.

- Put a number of suggestions to overcome those obtacles and glides.
