Abstract EN
Study deals with environmental security of mining companies and their special standards by identifying the concept of environmental security, significance of environment and the relation between industrial activities, environment and pollution.
Study sets forth a host of systematic questions on factories' activities which deplete environment or endanger it, and also sets numerous examples about environmental disasters.
It further turns spotlight on industrial activity and the role of society as a crucial means of environmental security awareness.
Study also shifts to an analytical study of international, regional and local legislations on impacts of industrial activities.
In its findings, study shows that it wasn’t until the launching of United Nations Environment Program UNEP that environment has become an issue of a wide international concern.
UNEP was founded as a result of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Nairobi 1972.
Similar international agreements have followed including Rio Earth Summit which was organized by UN in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Basel Convention which entered into force in 1992; Stockholm Convention in 2001 and GCC Environmental Evaluation 1994.
Study summed up with a future look at the subject including the activation of surveillance role in monitoring percentages stated in the general system of environment; avoiding disposal of wastes, particularly heavy metal and mining ones in water or in open areas as well as compliance with KSA environment standards; establishment of a government body for environment and activation of the principle of industrial and mining partnerships governance taking into consideration investors, inhabitants of areas neighboring to industrial activity.
Study also recommended the introduction of an article in the environment system that deals with effects causing diseases to mine workers or people living near such facilities and activation of civil society role in confronting facilities causing various types of pollution
