Abstract EN

The associations between central obesity, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and hyperlipidemia have been eventually called metabolic syndrome, where insulin resistance is assumed to be the main factor that connects these components.

Metabolic syndrome is considered a public health problem and a clinical problem at the same time.

The international medical organizations differ in determining the diagnostic criteria and components of the metabolic syndrome, where uric acid could be one of them.

Thus, the goal of this study was to assess the relationship between uric acid and metabolic syndrome, as uric acid was an additional risk factor playing an important role in the oxidative metabolism.

This study involved 191 metabolic syndrome patients (102 men and89 women) who recruited from many medical centers in Damascus.

Metabolic syndrome was defined using an international diabetes federation (IDF) criteria.

In addition 74 healthy subjects (32 men and 42 women) as a control group.

Obesity factors (body mass index, waist circumference, waist to hip ratio), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR and fasting insulin),uric acid and 6 MS-related parameters (triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C , fasting Glucose and diastolic and systolic blood pressure)were assessed.

Serum uric acid levels were significantly higher in metabolic syndrome group, in both sexes, compared with control group, and positively correlated with triglycerides, body mass index, HOMA-IR, insulin, waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, systolic blood pressure in both sexes.

This study showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between UA and cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, glucose and diastolic blood pressure in both sexes.

In conclusion, uric acid may be considered as an additional component of the metabolic syndrome
