Abstract EN

The present study treats a genre that was peculiar to the history of Arab literature, namely the divan writing (Diwaniyah) emanated form the courts of caliphs and sultans for the sake of government and statecraft.

The peculiarity of that genre stems from the fact that it integrates both art and politics.

This kind of writing is separate form other types of Arab writing, as it is distinct in the prerequisites and laws that regulate its form and content.

Despite the abundance of ancient writings classified under this genre, writings are sporadic in time and space.

Thus, the present study reviewed as much as possible of the products of this genre, showing their similarities and differences.

It also classified these products, giving interpretation and rationale for that classification.

It is, therefore, hoped that the article be a reference document for researchers in Arabic literature, providing theoretical support for those interested in this kind of writing.

The study defined the genre of Diwaniyah writing and stressed its significance and virtues.

It showed its functions in courts and political life, elaborating all aspects of form and content.

For convenience, exposition was divided to the three components of the Diwaniyah writing: introduction, content, and conclusion.

The article also referred to the procedures of writing this genre and the formal aspects that writers should be cognizant of.
