Obesity is a global rapidly growing disorder, that is associated with insulin resistance, and may lead to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia.

Recently, Vaspin was identified as an interesting novel adipokine with insulin-sensitizing effects, which is predominantly secreted from visceral adipose tissue in obese rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus.The objective of our study is assessment clinical importance of serum vaspin levels in obese Methods: Vaspin levels have been assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 60 obese subjects,( 30 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 30 subjects without it), compared with 20 healthy subjects as controls.

Results: Serum Vaspin levels increased significantly in obese compared with controls (P=0.003), and were higher in female (0.92 ng/ml) than these in male subjects (0.41 ng/ml) (P=0.0006), and correlated with BMI (P= 0.001) and insulin sensitivity indices [insulin (P=0.03) and HOMA-IR (P=0.008)] in nondiabetic obese.

Conclusions: We found a sexual dimorphism in circulating vaspin.

Elevated serum vaspin levels are associated with obesity and impaired insulin sensitivity, whereas type 2 diabetes seems to abrogate the correlation between increased circulating vaspin, higher body weight, and decreased insulin sensitivity.
