Abstract EN

Classifying small areas such as wards, neighborhoods, and enumeration areas according to their population characteristics is one of the most important techniques in geodemographic analysis.

Such classifications facilitate understanding of spatial patterns of population distribution in every spatial administrative unit and to enhance development plans.

Classifying areas into groups based on a specific number of variables can effectively help in highlighting and understanding spatial variation of socioeconomic and housing issues.

This research aims to classify Al- Riyadh governorates into clusters using different statistical variables derived from the 2004 Saudi census datasets.

Spatial and cluster analyses (Ward Hierarchal Method) were applied using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Spatial and attribute database were collated and integrated within a geodatabase.

The attribute data include a variety of variables such as access to public drinking water network, access to the public electricity network, access to public sewerage, owning a computer, internet service access and housing types.

These variables can effectively reflect spatial variation in household socioeconomic levels and thus sustainable human development.

The statistical findings and clusters were mapped.

The finding of this research indicated that Al Riyadh governorates vary in .public infrastructure coverage and accessibility to basic services
