The growth of literary criticism during the twentieth century is so revolutionary as to match the long established cultural value of the novel.

This growth could be noticed in the emergence of a plethora of literary theories that in the whole attempt to answer questions related to both the form and content of the novel.

The western experience in the literary theory and criticism has undeniable bearings on Arab critics and literary theorists, who spared no effort at translating the major western contributions in this field and exploit them in their readings of the new Arab novel.

The aim of this article is to bring to the fore some of the effects of western literary theory and criticism on its counterpart in the Arab world.
