Abstract EN

This is a brief introduction -that we consider as a novel approach– to the study of secularism.

The research was based on the importance of elucidating the concept behind the term in its Western birthplace, as well as the history of its entry to the Arabic nomenclature and the conditions of its spread in the Islamic World.

It purports moreover to reveal the cultural and religious identity and goals of the Arab Christian elite that propagated the term.

The paper overviewed the efforts of the prominent Muslim figures (e.g.

Jamaluddin Al-Afghani), who realized the new doctrine more than a century ago.

Those figures understood objectives of the Secularism and clarified it to the Arabic-speaking public, as it was understood in the West and contrary to what was propagated by the Arab Christian elite contemporary to Al-Afghani.

The paper included also the latest criticism of Secularism produced in the West, through discussing the terms “Fascist Secularism” and “Post-Secularism
