Abstract AR
Abstract EN
This study examines supra-segmental phonemes in Arabic and English “intonation, juncture, and length”.
It uses a comparative and contrastive approach by looking at the structural and functional characteristics of supra-segmental structure phenomena.
The final product is the “peer”, which is the basic rule to be learnt by a non-native speaker of English or Arabic alike, which is, indeed, the optimum approach pursued in contrastive linguistics, particularly when teaching non-native speakers.
The study reviewed relevant literature of Arab and non-Arab scholars on the theoretical background of supra-segmental phonemes.
It then sheds light on intonation, juncture, and length as a concept but also as a source of aesthetic values in Arabic and English.
Examples have been given from authentic sources, such as the Holy Quran and Arabic poetry.
Other sources were used so that the examples will be commensurate with the reality lived by students.
At the end, the study found that supra-segmental phonemes in Arabic and English are in harmony with each other in concepts and aesthetic values.
This will help in creating a solid background not only for teaching non-native speakers but also devising an educational program based on that harmony.
The study will also help in encouraging engagement in a number of issues that could show the commonalities between two or more languages having been seen before this study as unique linguistic traits of a given language.
