Abstract EN

In the last three decades, Oman witnessed rapid transformations in various areas of economic and social life; these changes have been resulted from the sudden change in the living style, educational conditions and the social services.

The transformation process conditions have led to deep and clear changes in the Omani family, and this change did not hurt only the form of the family but extended to social roles, as a result of what affected the traditional family in many aspects caused by the non-stable marriage.

This study aimed to explore the leading causes of divorce from the perspective of divorced women and men in the Omani society.

A survey has been distributed, which consisted of random questionnaires, to a certain group of divorced women and men (500 persons) who's divorcement's period did not pass 10 years, from various provinces in all over the Sultanate of Oman.

The reasons of divorcement were mainly emotional, ethical, religious, sex, reasons related to the intervention of the couple's parents in their affairs, economic reasons, housing-related reasons, reasons related to the presence of children, escaping from each other and never appreciating others and polygamy.

The study indicates that the first cause of divorcement in both groups (women and men) is the emotional reasons.

The second cause in the women's group only was moral and religious reasons.

On the contrary, the second cause in the men's group represents the presence of children and the neglecting of the wife's duties to her husband after birth.

The results also indicate that the third reason for the women's group is also the presence of children and the neglecting of the wife's duties towards her husband, while the men's sample were religious reasons.

The study finally showed that the fourth reason for the divorce to occur among the divorced women's sample of is the psychological side, the sample of divorced men showed that the fourth cause was the over-intervening by caused by couple's parents in the couple's family affairs.
