A discourse analysis of sayings and meanings in browning’s “muleykeh”

Browning‟s ”Muleykeh” (0771) has not been extensively studied from the linguistic perspective.

Previous studies on the poet‟s work have concentrated mostly on the thematic and psychological features of the texts.

The present study examines some sayings and their meanings used in the poem “Muleykeh”, in order to determine how language operates to express the manner of speaking as related to interlocutors, their roles, judgments and attitudes in specific discourse contexts.

The study highlights the nature of dialogue between interactants in the poem, in relation to social frames of reference.

The discourse approach adopted for the study, enables us to examine what is communicated (i.e.

discourse) and how it is communicated.

The hypothesis is that Browning could communicate his meaning in an unconventional manner.

The present research also proves that Browning‟s use of the Eastern Background enriched and strengthed his unconventional poetic practice.

Browning was ahead of his generation.

He is one of the founders of Modernism in English poetry in contents, themes, and techniques such as the development of thought process and his untraditional language.

He has a purpose in his technique.

The purpose of the paper is to reveal the purpose of the poet in using such a technique in his poem.
