Abstract EN

This study investigates the views held by Imam ai-Ash'a؛i regarding the issue of Imamah.

The study gives a brief biography of al-Ash’ari, the linguistic and teehnieal definitions of the term Imamah, the details of al-Ah’ari’s view about the Imamah and the evidence with which he supported his own views about this issue.

The study also sheds light on the conditions of the imamate, the ways by which this position is occupied.

It was found that Imamah is not one of the foundations of religion, Imamah is obligatory according to al-Ash’ari.

However the Imam should meet its conditions before his appointment.

Al-Ash’ari held the view that Abu Bakr was the person who was eligible most for this position after the death ofthe ?rophet, then comes Umar ibn al-Kahattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn abi Talib.

This was one ofthe points of consensus among the companions.
