Abstract EN

This study aims to examine the role of higher education institutions in the transition to a knowledge-based society from the perspective of the teaching staff in Saudi universities members, through the role played by these universities in the production and the generation and dissemination and hiring and investment knowledge analysis, the study of the challenges faced in the transition to a knowledge-based society and ways to activate this role, and whether there are significant differences in the nature of these roles attributed to variables: Degree, sex, years of experience, and scientific specialization.

The researcher tried to achieve these goals through a field study, descriptive and analytical, and depending on the approach and form social survey questionnaire; which consisted of several axes, according to the objectives of the study and its questions.

The study came to the weakness of the role of universities in the areas of knowledge production and dissemination as, while the evolution of relatively this role is evident with respect to utilizing it and invest, and that there are many challenges facing these universities in this area, including: the widening knowledge gap between the Arab and foreign education institutions, and the concentration of universities to transfer Only knowledge without trying to develop, and inadequate teaching staff in universities, and the existence of a gap between higher education and the needs of the labor market.

In light of these results the study suggested some recommendations that can contribute to activating the role of Saudi universities in building a knowledge society, and most important: the need to develop a strategy for scientific research in the UK plan, and motivate faculty members financially and morally effective in transition to contribute to the knowledge society global perspective.
