Abstract EN

The progress which occurred in the fields of Linguistics, Semiotic philosophy and modern logic led to emergence of a new approach to study symbolic activities.

This field began with philosophical researches of Susanne Langer (1895-1985) in forties of last century.

These works laid emphasis on analysis of meaning in its various formulas and forms.

This new analytical tendency was transferred to Anthropology, and particularly to Anthropology of Symbols and Anthropology of Religion.

Ever since, interest grew in studying the process of human perceptions about real events and their manifestations.

Since culture has been a pivotal area in many branches of humanities, mainly for anthropology, the culture itself is a fabric of symbols which cannot be understood without a thorough analysis of its symbolic units and components.

These symbols or symbolic units constitute a unique symbolic system.

Symbols are created by society and individuals and they simultaneously produce and reproduce their cultural identity.

Hence, this study tries to examine symbols and their meanings and presents sociological and anthropological trends in this area of research.

The research aims to measure the level of the Iraqi displaced families in the City of Erbil.

The present study also intends to identify the difference between social adaptation and research variables.

There is an attempt to identify the internal relations between the factors and social adaptation.

The population under scrutiny is the Iraqi displaced families settling in Erbil City, The total sample size reached (200) individuals.

Data collection was conducted between 15/2/2013 to 14/4/2014.The researcher adopts descriptive analysis method to analyse the research findings.

And the research was summarized to the following results: 1 : The presence of a high sense of research units in social adaptation with the host community.

2 : The nature of the relations between the sub-relational social adaptation factors and the main factor (social adaptation) was statistically significant, that are significant at 0.01 level.

3 : The most important social adjustment of displaced families manifested itself in social acceptance, friendship and social network
