The vitamin D endocrine system regulates bone metabolism and calcium homeostasis, as well as cellular proliferation and differentiation.

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) mediates Vit.

D activity, thus VDR gene polymorphisms may correlate with frequency of different diseases.

This study aimed to determine the distribution of VDR gene BSM-I polymorphism, using a RFLP in healthy individuals of Syrian population, and then compared this distribution with healthy individuals from some Asian countries.

Allelic frequencies of B vs b were 51% vs 49%.

Genotypes distribution was 28%, 45% and 27% for BB, Bb and bb, respectively.

In this study, comparison of allelic frequency and genotypes between individuals from Syria and some Asian countries illustrate the influence of ethnic group on the spread of this polymorphism.

These results demonstrate that the frequency and distribution of the VDR polymorphisms are different between populations from Syria and some Asian countries, such as Iran and Turkey.

Whereas no difference was noticed with the population of Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and India.
