Abstract EN
The current paper presents the reality of debate among the Islamists in Morocco, particularly after the Justice and Development Party of Islamic orientations formed the Moroccan government after winning elections held in November 2011.
The researcher sheds light on the ongoing debate in Morocco within a framework that is not isolated from the Arab Spring events that started in Tunisia and swept Libya and Egypt, creating an atmosphere of great uncertainty and the researcher considered these events as special political test for Morocco.
The researcher believes that the reasons beyond the Justice and Development Party winning were the failure of past partisan experience and the lack of call for reform in non-Islamist parties; and that the involvement of Islamists will reduce the effects of the Arab Spring revolutions that broke out in other countries; it is also believed that Justice and Development Party winning is increasing the legitimacy of monarchy on the one hand, as well as the integrity of the electoral process on the other hand, however, the party's electoral victory opens the door of debatebetween Justice and Development Party and the other Islamic groups and parties, particularly Al ‘Adl wa al Ihsane (Justice and Good Deeds),on the representation of the political Islam experience in Morocco.
The researcher’s review of the Islamists scene in Morocco indicates the dual role of the Justice and Development Party during the Arab Spring events by being in the middle between the State options and street claims.
This has led to variationin attitudes between Islamist movements, particularly during the preparation of the new constitution.
It seemed that the Justice and Development Party is trying to normalize relations with the state, through persuading the governmentto let it participate in the elections, however, the government's performance concerning the profile of the ban imposed on each of the Civilizational Alternative Party and the Movement for Nation has put in trouble in front of the Islamists.
while the strategy of Al ‘Adl wa al Ihsane is based on distinguishing itself from the Justice and Development Party, it is aware that the failure of this experience would affect the image of the Islamists in the street, in general.
Meanwhile, the success of it,it would, in return, make the equilibrium of power between the two parties would be out of balance, as it will emphasize the political participation option, adopted by the party, as opposed to the boycott option adopted by Al ‘Adl wa al Ihsane
