Abstract EN
The question of the Caliphate was central to the Ottoman presence in the MENA.
During WWI, the major elements of Caliphate politics involved the war, colonization of the Muslim world by the European powers, and the Ottoman Empire’s response to these developments.
These factors produced two challenges to the status quo: an attempt by France to devise a “Maghreb caliphate” in north-western Africa, and an “Arab caliphate” planned by Britain in eastern ME.
This paper analyzes the French project of the” Maghreb caliphate” represented by King Yussuf of Morocco during WWI and its significance in terms of the Ottoman Caliphate
