The study examines the theoretical and methodological issues of social media research and proposes new perspectives of tackling these issues The study based on perceptions that many obstacles are hindering the efforts of social media researchers in choosing their research subjects, in adapting the suitable theory and method to tackle social media phenomena.

The study tracked the transformations of social media research on the theoretical and methodological levels, defined its most vital problems, examined its status quo, outlined its shortcomings, examined the new trends of social media research and proposed new tracks to tackle these issues The study examined the recent social media research published in communication databases from 2010 to 2014, based on specific facets, from a qualitative not a quantitative analysis, to define the most vital theoretical and methodical issues of social media research, it scrutinized social media research issues, theories, tools and methods The study suggests that the best way to tackle social media research problems can be done by using multiple methods and tools, conducting the research on several phases, utilizing several methodological tools, developing new research tools, reviewing the previous theoretical statements and adapting the semi-theorizing approach.
