Abstract EN

Adopting a history of knowledge approach, the article examines the major transformations to Moroccan culture during the colonial period resulting from the exposure to cultural, social, and intellectual manifestations of the clash with modernity, and the encounter with a strange and different «other».

Managing cultural affairs in the modern sense, argues the author, originated in Morocco as a result of observing the «other» and imitating the other’s modes of being modern.
