Abstract EN

The current study aims at analyzing revenge in “Hamlet “by William Shakespeare based on the key elements of the structure of this kind of tragedy-tragedy of revenge - in the Elizabethan era.

The study will analyze revenge as a crime committed intentionally which occurred in the recent or distant past in mysterious circumstances.

The play begins with revenge and retaliation committed by the killer and ends with a largest number of victims involved in the crime and the death of the killer who hits back.

The study attempts to determine Hamlet’s attitude towards revenge; was it a personal vendetta between Hamlet and his uncle (Claudius) in order to reserve the dignity of the family, or was it a general revenge against the corrupt political system that governs Denmark –represented by his uncle the king – who seized the throne of, legitimate person, and his mother, the queen, who conspired to the legitimate king and « Polonius « The Lord Chamberlain of Claudius’s court, as well as a group of spies who work for the benefit of this system.

This led Hamlet to be aware that there was a corrupt system led by a corrupt system that controls the fate of Denmark, and in order to avenge the death of his father, Hamlet had to start the Elimination of King‘s retinue.

Shakespeare-and through the character of Hamlet - he expressed his political opinion which emerged from the message of the play with its religious connotations and implications through a deep political condemnation of the ruling system inherited from the Middle Ages and based on an alliance of the ruling regime, religious and feudal institution.

The current study has concluded that Hamlet‘s revenge was initially for the dignity and honor of the family, however, the evolution of events and the attempts of King and his retinue, which aimed to get rid of Hamlet, revealed that the monarchy which governs Denmark was a corrupt political system which was based on conspiracy and treason, and getting rid of this system was a national duty.
