Abstract EN

This study aimed at identifying the basic science processes that should be available in Arabic language textbooks for secondary stage, detect the degree of its availability, and how they are distributed in language competencies textbooks designed for the secondary stage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.To achieve this, the researcher used content analysis method, designed an analysis card, assured its validity and reliability, and then administered to the population of the study which was consisted of the four textbooks of language competencies designed for the secondary stage.The study concluded that the basic science processes that should be included in Arabic language textbooks for the secondary stage are eight competencies: observation, classification, measurement, inference, prediction, communication, usage of numbers, usage of temporal and spatial relations.These processes were available and distributed in the four textbooks in a varying proportions, and its distribution was imbalanced and not all of them were available in some textbooks, some of them were frequently duplicated such as : classification, observation, and measurement, some of these processes were slightly mentioned such as measurement, inference, prediction, and usage of numbers ,while temporal and spatial relations were rarely mentioned.

So, the study recommended reconsidering the content of language competencies textbooks and developing the units of the courses that depend on basic science processes.
