English Abstract

The introduction of new methods for the teaching of English had the intention of modernizing and improving the quality of English teaching at all levels.

This study investigated, far from teachers following one specific methodology, a bunch of methods to illustrate the advantages of the eclectic approach to the students’ achievement.

This is called the eclectic approach.

This study had main two aims: 1) Identifying the main principles and applications of the eclectic method in English learning and teaching.

2) Evaluating the applications of this method by presenting the merits and demerits.

The participants for this study were the entire intermediate students in two sections of grade seven in an international school in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This sample comprised of 58 male students enrolled for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Analysis of responses to the posttest questions reveals that the eclectic approach enhanced students' ability to produce grammatical sentences, to accurately circle the correct conjunction and then identify the type of this conjunction either subordinating, correlative or coordinating conjunction more than Conventional English Language Instruction used when teaching the control group.

The study ended with some recommendations of using the eclectic approach as a solution to achieve higher standards of teaching language.

Also, some suggestions are submitted.
