English Abstract

This research aims at exploring the main characteristics, themes and elements of magical realism in three novels by Angela Carter namely, The Magic Toyshop (1967), Night at the Circus (1984) and Wise Children (1991).

It simply tries to answer one main question: why are these novels considered as magical realism? Thus, it consists of four chapters and a conclusion.

Chapter one is an introduction to this thesis, and it tackles the life and the novels of Angela Carter from the perspective of magical realism.

It suggests a definition of magical realism, its historical background, critical views produced on magical realism and its chief characteristics.

There will be also an extended reference to the special quality of this topic that makes audiences or readers being attracted by it.

Each of the subsequent three chapters discusses one novel by Angel Carter focusing mainly on the theme and the use of magical realism.

Chapter two examines The Magic Toyshop from the viewpoint of magical realism.

It includes an examination of this mode and an analysis of its prominent features.

Chapter three introduces the second novel Nights at the Circus, and it studies magical realism from the angle of critical views produced on the novel.

Chapter four tackles the third novel Wise Children by treating it as a magical work.

This chapter approaches this element in the novel and the related ideas that may exist in this novel.

Finally, a conclusion follows to round up the results of previous discussions in the previous chapters.

This study can be described methodologically as critical and analytical in its treatment of the three novels
