Abstract EN

This paper aimed to study the impact of solar energy use on rural development in the Red Sea State (RSS) because the low population density in the State rural areas (6 persns\km2), the dispersed settlements, the weak infra-structure and the semi-desert climate constitute formidable challenges for rural development especially in energy uses.

The study followed the descriptive analytical approach and applied the suitable statistical analysis to reveal the findings.

Random sample of 100 individuals was selected from Port-Sudan, Sinkat, Haya and Toker localities to study the impact of solar energy uses in the sectors of agriculture, education, and health.

A questionnaire composed of 27 questions in seven sections was distributed to the samples.

The findings revealed that the impact of solar energy uses was positive with a magnitude of 37% in agriculture, 56—71% in education, 62% in health, 51—65% in water.

About 60% of the interviewees indicated the suitability of solar energy for rural areas.

The uses of SE were 73% in lighting purposes, 15% in irrigation and 12% in drinking water and vaccines preservation and traffic lights.

The constraints of solar energy uses in RSS were: high capital cost, weak training and low awareness
