Abstract EN

The study aimed to investigate to what extent standardized Arabic font types are effective to maximize legibility of road signs at a distance, therefore the researcher has applied some typefaces to find out the most suitable and legible one.The study is divided into two parts.

In the practical part, the researcher has employed four windows supported typefaces including two basic font types which are the Simplified Arabic and the Arial while the other two are less basic ones are the Advertising and Taybah.

In accordance with applied method, the researcher has adopted observation as a tool.

In this process, the four typefaces were used in traffic signs and designs that warn road users of a hazard ahead such as slippery road.

These signs were placed at different distances along Khartoum-Atbara highway namely the lane to Khartoum.In the second part of the study, the researcher has adopted descriptive method and assessed the role of the Arabic standardized font types in increasing the legibility of the road signs.

The researchers have randomly distributed questionnaires to the road users.

For data analysis, T-Test was employed to verify the first hypothesis.

SPSS was also employed for variance analysis (ANOVA) to verify the second hypothesis.The main conclusions of the study are that there are significant statistical variations between the standardized Arabic typefaces used in the traffic signs depending on the type of the vehicle
