Abstract EN

This study seeks to probe the role of Lexical Gaps and Neologism in shaping the narrative discourse of the renowned Sudanese writer Bushra al-Fadil.

Lexical gaps are a kind of possible\virtual words that are non-existing in the reality of language use, whilst Neologisms are newly invented words that may take the form of missing inflections, or missing equivalence in translation or a new meaning assigned to an old\ already existing word (for the purposes of this study, the two terms Gaps and Neologisms are used interchangeably, notwithstanding the differences between the two).Gaps and Neologisms may be used in narrative discourse and Al-Fadil is one of those very rare writers who have successfully and effectively utilized them.

The study not only unveils the writers exceptional skills in inventing these words, but also in making them the most salient shaper of his overall narrative discourse; hence, presumably the key to understanding his grand (overall) text and, arguably, the landmark characteristic of his creativity.In exploring the linguistic, aesthetic, semantic, pragmatic and stylistic features of these gaps and neologisms in the narrative discourse of al-Fadil, the study draws on a multitude of theories\approaches in both macro and micro-level linguistics (Morphology- Syntax Generative\Universal Grammar), Sociolinguistics (Diglossia, code and code-switching/mixing), Discourse, Pragmatics ( speech acts, implicatures and discourse moves) and Stylistics (concepts of deviation, foregrounding and defamiliarisation).

The narrative discourse of Buhra al-Fadil abounds in the creative employment of a wide range of lexical gaps and neologisms.

For the full investigation of the role and functions of these in the narrative discourse of al-Fadil, more is, undoubtedly, required.

Future researchers may reveal more about this role, by taking every single work of the writer in much more depth.
