English Abstract

Evaluation and improvement of the quality of treated wastewater produced from Karak hospital wastewater treatment plant (KWWTP) were performed.

The study included determination some influent and effluent quality parameters.

Physical parameters (Total suspended solids TSS, Temperature (T), chemical parameters (pH, Electrical conductivity EC, Cations Ca+2,Mg+2,Na+2 and K+, TOC, COD and BOD5), Anions (F-, Cl, PO4, SO4 and NO3), Heavy metals (Pb, Mn , Fe, Cr , Zn and Cu) and biological parameters (total coliform and E-coli).

The Result showed that KHWWTP was capable to remove 87.4% of influent COD, 85% of BOD, 72.9% of TOC, 72% of TSS, 55% of Ca+2, 25% of Mg+2, 42% of Na+2, 32% of K+, 66.6% of Fluoride (F-), 14.4% of Chloride (Cl), 34% of Nitrite (NO3), 16.6% of Phosphate , 29.7% of Sulfate (SO4), 19.35% of Pb , 89% of Fe and 25.8 % of Cu.

Heavy metals (Pb ,Mn ,Fe, Cr ,Zn and Cu) were evaluated using biofilm method which represent a composite sampling technique and grap sampling technique, the results showed different concentration between the two techniques, which is due to different contact period between the two sampling methods.

Oil shale ash was used as adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals (Pb, Mn, Fe, Cr, Zn and Cu) and TOC.

The results showed that oil shale ash is effective in removal of 43% of TOC , 56% of Pb, 40% of Fe and 39%, Cu, however no removal of Cr was recorded, while an increase in Pb concentration in the effluent was observed, the probable source of Pb is the pipe lines used in the plant.

The produced treated wastewater comply with Jordanian standards for treated wastewater reuse for restricted irrigation.

It is highly recommended to reuse treated water for irrigation to increase the green areas in the hospital territory and to safe an equal amount of fresh water being used for irrigation.
